However, he/she/it was talking about more than one person, a group, in general, not a single person. :P

Anyone counts as a singular pronoun, even though it references multiple people. He used them in an or statement, instead of an and statement. Bob and Kate are leaving; Bob or Kate is leaving. When using or, you take only one of the subjects into account when deciding on the verb.
