As an old yugioh fan (anything pre-Zexal), I laughed. Reminisce. I distinctly remember the olden days when I watched Yugioh every day after school as a child. Good times.

Lawlz. I remember that show from back in the day. I'm just waiting until all of a sudden its cool again.

I stopped paying attention once they came out with the God Card knock-offs in the yugioh with the duel academy. That and after Yugi faced Yami and they had that Brokeback goodbye.

It actually seems pretty fun to play now that I know old cards aren't banned like in pokemon just a few forbidden ones.

I used to ignore the banned cards lists when I played the game. I had a deck built around the Feather Duster, Raigeki, Obelisk, the forbidden one and toons.

The parting between Atem (Yami's actual name) and Yugi was quite tragic. And to be fair, the sacred beasts (the knockoffs you're referring to) aren't actually knockoffs. Though they are a really similar in terms of appearance, nothing else more than that really. All in all, in comparison they're actually quite a big disappointment.

In every series there's always those legendary/god card hybrid-like cards.

Nice. Haven't the money nor time to invest in the cards anymore. But I still follow it time to time. Oh and, Yugioh was always a better card game than Pokemon. The idea of Pokemon as a card game sends shivers down my spine.

Tbh, I've never really been a fan of banned cards. For the most part, they're far too overpowered imo. There's always a handful of exceptions to that statement though (i.e. Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the End & Chaos Emperor Dragon).

Seems like a pretty bloated deck.

Yes, with the exception of their appearences, they are entirely different, but I always went for pure power over effects, and the actual effects of Obelisk was right in my alley.

There are a lot of cards that you can get for relatively cheap now, most of the older cards that people don't have are relatively cheap because of the originals being released in newer packs (IE Gemini Elf, Mechanical Chaser, etc). The card games all follow roughly same rules with a few acceptions, though I will agree that the Yugioh card games were more addictive then the pokemon card game.

When you are going through competitions, the banned/restricted cards are the only thing that can keep you above water at that time (referring more to the restricted cards), that being the reasons I focus on those cards, specifically the Exodia decks and God Card Decks.

That's why they're a big disappointment. And to be fair, both god cards and sacred beasts have their respective advantages provided the right deck theme. God cards are more power buffs, but are able to be destroyed via card effects (unless you provide auxiliary cards as safeguards) and are more difficult to summon. Sacred beasts are comparatively easier to summon + they have comparable power to the gods. Sacred beasts also have more support cards/cards that sync well with them.

Obelisk basically was unusable until recently since it had no printed effects. It felt rather cheap using it back then, but now it's a fairly convenient card.

The prohibited cards are off-limit in tournaments. At least currently it's that way. The limited cards (which are only permitted in the quantity of a certain number) do keep you ahead of the ball game generally speaking. But their effectiveness is all deterministic.

And frankly, a God Card deck would probably suck. Far too many drawbacks in using them. Exodia (when allowed) has a few particular weaknesses as well - card destruction. Black Wings/Six Samurais are where it's at.

All cards with more than 9 stars were usually not worth it to try and use in a deck, and the fact always comes down to effects being the main driving force when saying it is the easy way to kill him...Except for his actual effect:

Requires 3 Tributes to Normal Summon (cannot be Normal Set). This card's Normal Summon cannot be negated. When Normal Summoned, cards and effects cannot be activated. Cannot be targeted by Spells, Traps, or card effects. During the End Phase, if this card was Special Summoned: Send it to the Graveyard. You can Tribute 2 monsters; destroy all monsters your opponent controls. This card cannot declare an attack the turn this effect is activated.

I think we mean the same general thing there, just worded differently.

Exodia can be protected with simple cards: Prohibition against Card Destruction, any card with effects that return cards to the hand from the graveyard which there are almost endless cards and combinations that can do that now.

God Card decks in singularity, not as a group, thats just insane and would require way too many cards to take care.

Dueling Network

It's pretty much the best freely available online yugioh game out there. The gameplay is all manual, so if you're used to the automated games you'll probably be a bit confused. You'll get used to it in due time though.

Take precaution though: for your own peril, I'd advise you to choose a safe password if you don't want your account stolen. I've thrown together tools that have broken into more than a handful of accounts in the past. Including a mod. And that leads me to this brief sub-story. I once got into an admin account and banned as many users as I could (and unbanned a couple of mine). As a consequence, they reset their servers and I lost access to the account. I was also banned from my main, Protozoid.

That's true. But then you're obscuring the main role of the deck with prevention cards and such. An ideal Exodia deck consists of 40 cards. If you're aware of what you're up against, Exodia is actually quite simple to counter.

Homogeneous God Card decks are actually more effective as your deck is more balanced or otherwise oriented around them. Thus more support (which in turn leads to quicker summoning, better defense, and overall more efficiency).

Singularity would be bad pragmatically speaking (been there, done that), not to mention there's this.

I was so freaking happy when those got banned. My cousin had a deck based around getting black luster and yata garasu out on the field and then basically owning people. Plus since he really only restricted himself by saying he would only use light and dark monsters in the deck, he really just had an absurdly overpowered beat down deck.

But those are classic cards. Black Luster Soldier is sometimes just limited rather than prohibited though. Which is good. It could be horrendously abused if it weren't limited, but I think it's better off being limited instead of banned altogether.

It holds a classic foothold in the history of Yugioh.

Tbh, while Chaos Emperor Dragon is a good card as well, I don't really care too much for it.

I don't care about any other incarnation of Black Luster Soldier except Envoy. That care was absurdly over powered. It could attack repeatedly and it could remove cards from play that were stronger than it. Aside from that it was way to easy to get on the field. Plus anyone worth their salt could then keep it on the field long enough to win since a direct attack was worth 3000.
The only reason I like the card is that it is a cannon card that was usable in a real life situation. Most are just not and I always hated that.

I like Chaos Emperor Dragon, it's one of my favorite cards but I've never found a practical use for it really.

I agree with this completely. All other Black Luster Soldier variants (I believe there's only two - the original and the incarnation) are bad except for Envoy. Which was canon and a viable part of Yugi's deck.

It's OP, but a pretty useful card. One of my all time favorites to say the least.

Somewhere back in Jr high before my cards were stolen.
I was lucky enough to be given my friend's old deck of mismatched cards, and now just sort of adding to it.
If anyone has any suggestions on a good starter deck or what to aim for that'd be pretty awesome.

What kind of deck to look for all falls down to a matter of personal preference. If you like machine monsters, go with something machine-based. Water monsters, water theme deck. And so on.

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a pretty good resource for checking out cards. I don't know of too many card catalog type websites.

And yeah, Change of Heart is a classic. But now there's modern alternatives to it like Brain Control and others. And do you mean Duke Devlin? I didn't really like the Dungeon Dice yugioh all too much but his appearances all fall under the original series - which is pretty much the best Yugioh series.

In descending order, here are my favorite series: Original, GX, 5Ds. It's a bit ironic since that's the actual order of when the series aired and chronologically it seems like the series are getting worse. The ones I mentioned though are pretty awesome.

I'm debating doing a Laval/Pyro deck but I dunno. I think I'll test it out on the DN first before I sink my money completely into something.
Though I have to admit I have a lot of fun just collecting the cards.
