I know very well about a mangaka's improvement of skill over time. The best case scenario for me would be this series (same character in both pages):

Thats too big of a leap, its basically recreating the character.

It was somewhat the same for Rave too.

Rave was more of a hairstyle change, that picture you posted is a complete make over.

Not just hair style, in terms of facial and body proportions too. If you want a more accurate comparison, try looking at Fairy Tail, which has large changes from Rave, I'm confident that if Rave were still serializing today it'd look a lot like Fairy Tail. Plus there's nothing wrong with a style change, sometimes it proves that one is gaining more mastery of drawing, you still have a long way to go Defy. :p
