Harry Potter

Okay so the big argument is that people of the Christian faith don't like Harry Potter. This is mainly because they believe it support occultism, as well as paganism and satanism. Im pretty much asking, how does harry potter support things like that? Like specific examples directly relating Christian beliefs/the bible to the popular book series. I am not Christian so I haven't read the bible or anything

Some of my friends say that dementors and the giant snake symbolize some evil things, so I was looking for more direct examples of that. Even quotes from the bible if thats possible. ;P

I'm Christian and they don't disallow you to read it but they frown upon it lol
Valdemort signifies the devil since he's unleashing evil to torment others, aka dementors.
There's also the black magic that can kill people, possess, corrupt, etc.
I don't have direct quotes or anything and I'm not sure those are the real reasons those are just what I think. But I, as a christian, don't see anything demoralizing of it so I read it.

My cousin is a hard core bible thumper southern baptist. All her friends and herself LOVE harry potter. So im just going to say this is false and leave it at that.

I don't believe either. I fail to see how Harry Potter demeans Christianity, which is why I am asking for people to explain w/ examples.

I know a lot of Christians who read Harry Potter with no trouble.
I guess this is kinda fallout of the times when the churches used to damn D&D because it had Satanistic elements. :/

okay if Harry Potter is EVIL, then so are hundreds of thousands of books then. Why can't those Religious eggheads figure out that they lost their power to control a few centuries ago.

go figure, religion, while nowhere near as powerful a tool as it used to be in the old days, still has a decent bit of power, enough said.

But there are all kinds of communities in the world, some of which can and do damn certain forms of media for their content (half the people I know in and around my place hate anime because they think it's too lewd sometimes. And this is coming from the same people who jack off to online porn and the more risque FTV shows.)

the world is full of hypocrites, Go figure. It's just annoying when the moan about the must insignificant thing really. The books are labeled Fantasy/fiction. so its all freaking Make believe. oh wait....just like the bible, except Pooter hasn't been re-written to death.

It is the earliest work. They made up stories to get their mind control out there, and their Main character was dead a few hundred years before they made the book so really its not the guys teaching, just what another power hungry person wrote down to control people and make himself feel important. Religion is just over gloried cults. that's it.

but it IS a big money-spinner. For evidence of the same, you need look no further than the temple of Lord Venkateswara in this country. Richest temple in the world, hell, they make a mint of money out of the tonsured hair of devotees who come there to pray. :/

If iwee to choose a religion i'd rather be a freaking Buddhist, They have kick ass teaching, no money and no stories about how the devil will rape me if i was to watch South Park

they do have a slightly more strict interpretation of the karma principle as opposed to what you'd see in Hinduism. But apart from that, yeah, Buddhism is pretty much the ideal religion.

If there was no religion, think of how many countless wars that would have never happened. Opinions always bring violence when the other person is too thick headed to accept it.

true that - according to most historians, this kind of attitude was common even amongst the cavemen. Most of them were extreme to the point that they forbade any sort of change in their lifestyles (if this worked for us, then it works for you, go figure.)
In fact, anyone trying to bring about change used to be branded an outcast, if they didn't get squished straight away.

This is why we don't have hover crafts running on veggie oil because change is bad when we can just have large SUV's costing us thousands of bucks in gas to maintain >.<

Why does organised religion have to put their foot into everything? I mean, it's a work of fiction - fantasy, not to be taken literally, just a bit of fun. They've got no right to attempt to tell people what they can and can not read. They go way too far. It's run like a fucking business.

A remember a few years ago their financial minister said the Vatican's assets were worth around $5bn a few years ago. It's crazy.

Ever since the introduction of the credit card, things have gone to hell in a handbasket as far as the consumer industry is concerned, and introduces new problems, of stuff like debt recovery *looks at large quanta of failing banks.*

We are very weak minded creatures since we always sway with the current. Even if you say you don't conform, but conforming is conforming since you are following others still. its just amazes me that we haven't died out yet.

Yes Harry Potter does reveal itself as a hero such as a Saint of some sort, but It was just a book that Hollywood twisted into a movie.

I like Harry potter.....Sometimes I think everyone needs a little magic in their lives

I dont see anything wrong with harry potter due to the fact that it's targeted at yound teens.

I just don't get why Twilight hasn't gotten all this attention from religious people. Vampires, Blood-Sucking, Baby Making o.o thats 100x worse than harry potter.

Harry potter is just a book. I don't know why they are so serious about this. If they are so religous they should just stick to the bible and stop reading harry potter
